Why you need an Antenna Design Engineer

Aerials are still regarded by many as a 'Black Art' and seriously misunderstood. In fact quite the opposite, antenna design is an exact science and highly predictable, especially since modern computer software has become widely available. The real expertise comes in transforming a design into reality, much of this through practical skills and interpretation/understanding which can take several years of 'hands on' to develop.

Experience has taught me that a well designed antenna is tolerant of error in its construction whereas a poor design is not.

Quite often users expect their radios to 'just work'. However, an aerial cannot produce a radio signal that isn't there. Reception/coverage is largely determined by 'Propagation' and 'Terrain'. For example, visitors to Devon here in the UK often discover that they cannot receive a mobile phone signal in many of the valleys.

I can help guide you through this maize and actively encourage my clients and their staff to manufacture their own antennas and keep valuable work and important skills here in the United Kingdom.

In my view many UK firms have made a serious error of judgement in putting cost before quality by deciding to import cheap antennas from foreign manufacturers. Having had the opportunity to examine/test many of these designs I can report that performance and reliability are not attributes!

An aerial is probably the most important part of any radio/wireless communications system, how and where it is sited are equally significant!

Finally, I have experience with antennas used in Marine, Land and Aeronautical applications for both Telecommunications and Military end users.
